TIME AND TEMPERATURE AND RATE OF CHANGE
10/03/10 We are learning about time and temperature. I would like to learn more about temperature and converting them
I'm assuming your mean converting from celsius to farenheit Sophie? We will look at this next week. Mrs. Breeds.

W.A.L.T. We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.
Today we did a FIO activity where we had to go on the computer and work out the time-zone differences and add the flight times. We had to look at the deparrture times and the arrival times to do this.It was very challenging but also fun.
Sophie - this is a description of what you did today, not what you learnt. The question I asked you was to explain what time zones are and give an example from your learning today. Go back and read the notes on the main journal page. Mrs Breeds.

W.A.L.T. We are learning about different time zones around the world and how to calculate time differences.
Times zones work as the sun moves around the earth so if you are on the other side of the world it will be a different time. the times around the world works to Grenich mean time. Grenich is a place in England and it depends on how far away you are from Grenich to how different the time in your country is.
If you look at a time zone map you will see what the time will be when Grenich is 00:00 and it also shows all the time zone areas.
A huge improvement Sophie - this is a clear explanation of what you have learnt.

W.A.L.T We are learning about exchange rates for currency.
When you travel around different countrys there are different currencys.Currencys are how much you get for each New Zealand dollar e.g for Australia you get $0.8883 for every 1 NZ dollar. If you had 200 dollar is NZ and you were going to Australia the maths you would do is 200 x 0.8883 = 177.66 Australian dollars. Currencys change when according to the stockmarkets and the economects.
A good explanation here Sophie.

W.A.L.T We are learning about the difference between Celsius and fahrenheit for temperature.
Celsius is the old form of mesurment for tamperature. Over in the US they still use Celsius as the mesurment for temperature. Fahrenheit is the more new form of mesuring temperature and that is used in most of the other countries. The formular to get to Celsius from Fahrenheit is subtract 32 ,times it by 5 then divide by 9 and then you will get the correct tempurture but in Celsius. And if you want to go from Celsius to Fahrenheit you add 32 ,times it by 9 then divide by 5.
Sophie - you've got these around the wrong way! Celsius is the newer measure, Fahrenheit is the older measure. To go from Fahrenheit to Celsius is C=F-32*5/9. To go the other way, it's F=C*9/5+32.

W.A.L.T Use algebraic thinking to solve decimal subtraction problems.
Today we learnt a new statagy to solve decimal subtraction problems. This new statagy is you add or subtract a sertain amout to make the subtracting number even e.g 2.34-1.7 you would add 0.3 to both munbers and make the equation 2.64-2=0.64. The new equation is alot easier to work out then the first equation. I love the new statagy because it makes an equation that starts off quite difficult really easy.
Sophie thanks for your honest feedback. I am pleased you enjoy using this new strategy. I am sure it will be useful. TC

W.A.L.T We aer learning to use temperature as a tool to help us with integer problems.
Today we learnt to use temperature to help us with our integer problems. We used hot and cold as postive and negitive to make working out the problem easier.[positive=hot, negitive=cold] Sometimes it can get a little confusing because the problem wants you to minus but you might actually have to add.eg -2 - -5 = +3
I agree it can be confusing at times however if you stick with the idea of temperatures it makes it a lot easier to follow in your mind. TC.

W.A.L.T We are learning to use a number of different problem solving stategies to solve complex problems.
Today I learnt the Guess And Check stategy it works well for problems that are good for estimating and also ones that are a little bit hard to work out. I found it really fun to use as a stategy.
I would like to see you using some of the more complex strategies and being able to choose a suitable one for your problem. I too like guess and check but we can get stuck using this as our only strategy which is a danger.

W.A.L.T We are learning new types of graphs.

Over the last week and a half I have learnt lots of new graps to show the two different types of data, Continuous and Discrete. The new graphs I learnt was a Histograph, Dot Plot. Double Dot Plot, Scatter Plot and meny more also I have reminded myself of meny more graphs that I have already learnt but just forgot like th pictograph and stipgraph. I really enjoy statistic as a part of maths because you get to go and collect data and then get to make it into a graph and you cant top been able to show your learning by something other then writing.
That is a great approach to take Sophie. It is good to see we have reprised some of the graphs you did know and the introduced some new ones. Can you explain continuous and discrete data?

30/04/10
Discrete data is data that can be counted and is most likely not to change. Continuous data is data that can be measured and and is taken in a set period of time because it changes frequently.

W.A.L.T Draw and interpret Box and Whisker graphs.
Today we learnt how to show data in the form of a Box and Whisker graph. I now feel confident working with Box and Whisker graph and I can show data clearly using them.Box and Whisker graphs are to show Discrete Data and it shows the Median, Upper Quartile, Lower Quartile and the Range. Box and Whiskers Graphs are very fun to use and I very much enjoy showing Discrete data with it.
Do you feel confident in interpreting these graphs as well? This is an important component of what we are looking at this year.
I do feel confident with using these graphs. I have learnt how to and I have done practice so I feel very confident when I have to display data using a Box And Whisker graph.

Over the past week I have learnt how to set out a questionare. Also we have written up our questionares and surveys for our statistical investigations. It has been very hard because we had to write up our questions so that they make sense and we also have to make sure that we gather all the imformation that we need. I am really looking forward to finishing my statistical investigation and taking it to the next level by showing all of my imformation and labeling everything properly etc.
Well done Soph. Its good to see that you are learning new things and enjoying your work. Wendy
What did you pick up on that you need to do better with your investigation this year Sophie when you reviewed the winning ones compared to the ones that didn't gain a place?
Always good to look at other examples - you can laern a lot from both the good ones and the not so good ones! It certainly isn't easy to set good questions but they are the key to a successful investigation so don't stop trying to improve your 'technique'! Mr C

W.A.L.T We are learning to use excel to show graphs.
I am having a lot of fun at the moment learning how to use excel it is great fun. I can now take the new skills that I have learnt and most probably be able to use it in the future. I now know how to convert data i have collected into graphs that suit the type of information it is. I am glad I am learning how to use excel it is a great skill to have.

Today we did our second otago Problem Solving Challange. I was very proud of myself today because I got my highest score ever. On my first Problem Solving Challange I only got 2 questions right and this time I got 4 questions right also after the last Otago Test we had to set goals and this time i followed all of my goals i set and they definatly helped to improve my score.
Awesome result Sophie. I think this is also a product of your determination as well. Very proud of you.

Last week we did knowledge assesment and while doing that i learnt that i have some gaps that i need to improve on.I need to practice my Stage 8 Place Value I can do that by taking every opportunity to practice and every opportunity to learn new ways of how to work out place value questions.I also need to improve my Stage 8 Basic Facts I can do that by working out everyday lifestyle equations e.g when my mum buys somethings at the supermarket and trying to beat the till at working out the change and other simple things like that.
Some really interesting ideas Sophie. There are a number of websites that you can use as well such as the nzmaths website for families. If you do a google search for maths, place value you will find some really interesting things. I would also talk to Mr Cheer next week about some games you could play at home. Remember learning should be fun and challenging,
